![]() In February 2020, Criterion regained oversight of the franchise. Ghost Games would develop Need for Speed Rivals, Need for Speed reboot, Need for Speed Payback, and Need for Speed Heat (2013-2019). At the time, 80% of Ghost Games' work force consisted of former Criterion Games employees. In August 2013, following the downsizing of Criterion Games, Swedish developer Ghost Games would become the main studio for the franchise and oversee future development. Ward wouldn't confirm that all Need for Speed games in the future would be developed entirely by Criterion, but he did say the studio would have "strong involvement" in them and would have control over which NFS titles would be released in the future. Īt E3 2012, Criterion Games vice president Alex Ward announced that random developers would no longer be developing NFS titles. Prior to Electronic Arts' purchase of the company in 1991, it had created popular racing games such as Stunts and Test Drive II: The Duel. The Need for Speed series was originally developed by Distinctive Software, a video game studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Due to its strong sales, the franchise has expanded into other forms of media including a film adaptation and licensed Hot Wheels toys. The franchise has been critically well-received and is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, selling over 150 million copies of games. The series has been overseen and had games developed by multiple notable teams over the years including EA Canada, EA Black Box, Slightly Mad Studios, and Ghost Games. Additionally, a free-to-play mobile installment released in 2015, Need for Speed: No Limits, is actively developed by Firemonkeys Studios, the developers of Real Racing 3. The most recent game, Need for Speed Unbound, was released on December 2, 2022. The series released its first title, The Need for Speed, in 1994. The series is one of EA's oldest franchises not published under their EA Sports brand. The series generally centers around illegal street racing and tasks players to complete various types of races while evading the local law enforcement in police pursuits. Multiplayer games are available for up to four players, through Wi-Fi Ad Hoc or Infrastructure.Need for Speed ( NFS) is a racing game franchise published by Electronic Arts and currently developed by Criterion Games, the developers of Burnout. There is a large variety in cars and customization, but with a trimmed-down selection in general. Instead, you move from event to event straight away. Unlike the console versions, you cannot roam freely in the city to search events. ![]() Another one is Double Down, where you need to win races with a full heat meter. The PSP version adds new modes such as Tuner Takedown where you race as a cop and take down the street racers with a limited amount of time. You can try to outrun the cops, but the levels also contain pursuit breakers special events that can slow down the chase. There are regular races, but also heat challenges where you need to get the cops off your tail, or break through roadblocks. Progress is achieved by completing several events (milestones). There is no storyline however, and the cutscenes have also been removed. Just like Need for Speed: Most Wanted, the game is centered around a career mode and Blacklist 15, where you need to work your way up a ranking by beating several racers. ![]() Most Wanted 5-1-0, of which the numerals refer to the police code for street racing, is the second Need for Speed game to be released on the PSP.
